How Does Hail Damage Metal Roofing?

Contrary to popular belief Metal Roofing is actually fairly impervious to hail damage. Metal roofs are easily the most robust and weather-resistant variety out there. However, even the strongest roofs fall to an onslaught from unrelenting storms, especially of the kind that Oklahoma sees. If you notice denting or punctures it might be time to hire hail damage repair services.

Identifying Hail Damage in Metal Roofing

Like we said, metal is rather resilient but brutal Oklahoman hail storms are difficult to keep up with.

  • The industry standard requires metal roofs to be tested against hail as wide as 2 inches in diameter. Since we have already established that Oklahoma hail can get much worse, we can expect minor to heavy denting on the metal shingles. Take note that denting is mostly a cosmetic issue and does not compromise the roof’s strength much.

  • If though, the hail is sharp-edged and flung on the roof with enough force, it can create punctures. Punctures are a cause of serious concern and if left to disrepair will cause leaks and water intrusion. Moisture damage in turn can cause rot and mold to set in.

  • In the worst of storms, we have also heard of metal shingles breaking apart from the sheer force and impact of the storm. While it is still rare, broken metal shingles should be immediately reported to the hail damage repair professionals.

What Factors Can Worsen Hail Damage on Metal Roofs?

  • Size of The Hail

Oklahoma is known for some pretty giant hail, often ranging from 4 to 6 inches in diameter. Usually hail this big is going to cause at least a minor amount of denting. The denting can get worse if the storm is a particularly harsh one.

  • Thickness of The Metal Sheet

The thickness of the roof plays a significant role in determining the amount of hail damage it takes. Metal roofs are measured in thickness using a gauge system. The higher the gauge is, the thinner the roof will be and thus, worse the hail damage.

  • Slope of The Roof

A gently sloped roof takes a direct hit from the hail. Whereas a steeper roof is more likely to deflect the hail resulting in fewer damages.

  • Rib Rollers Over Flat Roofs

In areas susceptible to frequent hailstorms, roofing companies strongly recommend adding rib rollers to your metal roof to keep the denting in check.

  • Roof Decking

Metal roofs installed over solid deck support are considerably less prone to denting. A frame support on the other hand has space underneath the roofing for the metal to crease.

  • Embossed Metal

Stucco-embossed metal (and other varieties of embossed metal) are very useful if you are looking for an option that doesn’t show much denting. This is ideal for when the denting causes no damage to the structural integrity but takes away from the visual appeal of the roof.

  • Paint System Finish

The finish of the paint can be important when considering dents. Matte finish paints are slightly better at hiding the odd dent and dimple than glossy ones. In fact, glossy finishes draw out the dents and make them look unsightly.
